Abstract
The purpose of this study is to provide basic material for improving training education, based on a needs analysis of training education related to core competencies of mental health social workers, in order to preemptively respond to the changing environment.
To achieve this objective, a survey was conducted with 144 Level 1 and 106 Level 2 mental health social workers (total 250). According to the survey, competencies importance and the difference with current level were analyzed using the t-test and the order of importance for competencies was determined through the Borich Formula and Locus for Focus model. According to the analysis results, ¡®understanding suicide and intervention¡¯ should be considered as a priority during training education for mental health social workers. The order of subsequent importance is ¡®crisis intervention¡¯, ¡®understanding family intervention and case studies¡¯, ¡®mentally disabled persons¡¯ human rights and advocacy,¡¯ ¡®understanding mental health law and policy,¡¯ ¡®life cycle mental health¡¯, ¡®understanding addiction and intervention,¡¯ ¡®interviewing by mental health diagnosis¡¯, ¡®community resource and mobilization,¡¯ and finally ¡®developing and evaluating mental health programs.¡¯ In addition, commonly needed competencies across mental health social workers, mental health psychologists, and mental health nurses are, first, ¡®open communication with other disciplines¡¯ and second, ¡®ability to manage role conflict.¡¯ Finally, it was discovered that crisis intervention, community resource and mobilization competencies should be emphasized more in community - based practice sites such as community rehabilitation center and mental health centers than in medical fields such as mental hospitals and clinics. Implications for improving training education for mental health social workers were discussed based on these results.
